The International CAPM When Expected Returns Are Time-Varying

چکیده
This paper derives a dynamic version of the international CAPM. The exchange-rate risk factors and intertemporal hedging factors are derived endogenously in a model that builds upon Campbell (1993). We provide a theoretical foundation for empirical risk factors often used in international asset pricing, including dividend yields, forward premia and, especially, exchange-rate indices. The model nests the standard CAPM, the international CAPM and the dynamic CAPM. Empirically, the model performs quite well in explaining average foreign-exchange and stock market returns in the US, Japan, Germany and the UK, and exchange-risk and intertemporal hedging factors play some role in pricing these assets. However, while derived in a theoretically sound fashion, these new factors are proportional to covariances with the world market portfolio. Hence, for practical purpose, the model does not perform better than the standard CAPM model. We apply the model to explain returns on portfolios of high book-to-market stocks across countries, and ̄nd that the exchange rate and intertemporal hedging factors do not help to predict these returns. Hence, they cannot account for the two-factor model proposed in Fama and French (1998). JEL Classi ̄cation Numbers: G12, G15

Studying the Expected Returns Based on Carhart Model Com-pared to CAPM Model and Implicit Capital Cost Model Based on Cash and Capital Flow of Growth and Value stocks
The purpose of this study was to examine the expected returns of Carhart model compared to the capital asset pricing model and the implicit capital cost model based on cash and capital returns of growth and value stocks. The statistical population consisted of the companies listed in Tehran Stock Exchange and the time domain is between 2007 and 2016. By choosing Cochran sampling, 126 companies ...

متن کاملDoes the Nonlinear APT Outperform the Conditional CAPM?
The conditional CAPM and the nonlinear APT are two important extensions of the Sharpe-Lintner constant beta CAPM. Bansal, Hsieh, and Viswanathan (1993), and Ghysels (1998) suggest that the nonlinear APT is empirically more successful than the conditional CAPM. Using a flexible nonparametric version of the conditional CAPM, we get the opposite result: the conditional CAPM does a substantially be...
متن کاملA Cross-Sectional Test of Linear Factor Models With Time-Varying Risk Premia
This paper explores the ability of theoretically-based asset pricing models such as the CAPM and the consumption CAPM referred to jointly as the (C)CAPM to explain the cross-section of average stock returns. Unlike many previous empirical tests of the (C)CAPM, we specify the pricing kernel as a conditional linear factor model, as would be expected if risk premia vary over time. Central to our a...
متن کاملTemporal Aggregation and the Continuous-Time Capital Asset Pricing Model
We examine how the empirical implications of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) are affected by the length of the period over which returns are measured. We show that the continuous-time CAPM becomes a multifactor model when the asset pricing relation is aggregated temporally. We use Hansen's Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) approach to test the continuous-time CAPM at an unconditional l...
